Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Mobile Data Collection Technologies Training – 13th – 28th December 2021
This is a short course that will provide participants with practical knowledge and skills in the fundaments of GIS. Participants in this course will be acquire skills in the integration of GIS with research and M&E activities aimed at improving the effectiveness and communications of results to management, funding partners, and target beneficiaries. GIS is fundamental in creation and use of maps and charts to help reveal relationships, patterns, and trends for project indicators in a way that is quickly understood by program managers and easy to share.

Evaluate data for use in a GIS mapping project.
Visually analyze feature relationships and patterns on a GIS map.

Course Content
Introduction to GIS & KEY concepts

Introduction to GIS concepts: Definition and application of GIS.
Introduction to 5 Components of a GIS Systems
Introduction to GIS Software (QGIS) Installation and Interface. We will use the latest version for this course that has extra functionalities and updates compatible with Windows.
Managing and manipulating GIS Data, Datum and Projections
Data types in GIS: Vector and Raster models.
Working with tabular data such as CSV and excel in QGIS. Performing Spatial Join for non-spatial data.
Geospatial functions and capabilities

Development, Exquisite Map Making and Presentation of Maps

Working with spatial Databases, Geopackages and Spatialite layers.
Working with GIS Data. Digitization and Georeferencing. Creating your own data in QGIS
QGIS Mapping techniques
Basic to advanced Labeling, Styling and symbolization
Cartography and Customization of Legends
Using the print Composer to make final maps.
Automation of Map making.
Creating Value Maps, Cascading selects and Heat Maps/Dot density Maps & Choropleth Maps.
Creating graphs i.e., pie charts, Histograms and Text diagrams with the aid of inbuilt plugins.

Vector Geoprocessing, Analysis and Retrieving and Sharing Data

Performing different vector Geo-processing functionalities and analysis
Performing vector analysis
Topology & Error Checking
Basic Spatial Adjustment
Batch processing to aid Project analysis.
Using useful QGIS Plugins to create web maps for sharing and hosting data online.

Mobile Data collection & Techniques for Integrated Survey/GIS Data

Survey Questionnaire Design & Integration of GPS data
Introduction to mobile data collection
Account Opening & Management in KOBO/ODK Aggregate Server
Question Types & Form Authoring in KOBO/ODK
Accessing Forms on Android Mobile using KOBO/ODK Collect Apps
Survey and GPS data collection with Mobile Phones
Data aggregation in Servers, Data Exploration, Downloading & Data Exportation

Methodology
The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprise of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, live sessions, and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with more than 15 years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

Live Didactic Training, using lecturettes (short lectures, each less than 30 minutes), to introduce sessions and state the key objectives and concepts.
Individual and Group Work, to allow participants to apply the concepts to real situations
Case studies and videos, as tools to demonstrate real situations or lessons which participants will be able to use as examples for their own work.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

Lead Trainer: Wiseman Kelonye
Experienced Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Analyst with a demonstrated history of working in the information technology and services industry. Expertise include geodatabase and spatialite database development, satellite image processing and earth observation techniques and, advisor on field data collection among others. Has over 10 years’ experience as a skilled trainer in GIS/RS software for both Commercial e.g., ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, MapInfo Pro, Adobe Illustrator (AI) and FOSS e.g., QGIS, SAGA, Blender 3D, ODK/KOBO Toolbox among others.
Co- Trainer: Mr Leone Mawa (Kenya)
He is a top-notch training consultant for a series of training organisations. He is particularly deeply rooted in training on M&E, project proposal development, project management, grants writing and grants management, report writing, data collection, management, and analysis among others. He has a wide experience in mobile data collection techniques. In terms of report writing, he has helped organisations in developing results-based report writing templates.
